What is SACON?

SACON stands for Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History is governmental Centre located in Coimbatore in  Indian State of Tamil Nadu. As we know Ornithology is study of birds and their habitat. Salim Ali was great ornithologist and  bird watcher of India so to carry forward his legacy Govt decided to setup SACON. This organization is direct controlled by the Government of India.

Who Was Salim Ali?

Salim Ali was born on 12th November 1896 in present day Mumbai. Once he shot down as sparrow with his toy gun and this incident marked the Making of Salim Ali the Ornithologist and Naturalist. Later he contributed in the field of ornithology and many organization which include study of birds and their habitat.

Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History

The Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) is a national centre for information, education and research in ornithology and natural history in India. It was inspired by and named in honor of Salim Ali, the leading pioneer of ornithology in India. It is an autonomous organization established in 1990 as a public- NGO partnership between the MoEF&CC, and the Bombay Natural History Society(BNHS) under the Centre of Excellence Scheme and registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act. Its headquarters are at Anaikatti, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. SACON is associated with the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
